In the Words of Others - Choosing the Right Quote For Your Scrapbook Pages

Tapestry by CR Gibson STK12-3464 12-Inch by 12-Inch Scrapbook Refill PagesIt may be true that a picture may be worth a thousand words, when you are trying to preserve a memory for future generations it helps to add a little verbiage to your pages. Memory isn't always accurate, and to really get the most out of your scrapbooking efforts, you may want to consider adding some quotes or phrases to your pages.

Think of using quotes as a sort of bridge between writing an entire diary entry about your photos and losing the meaning behind the pictures by leaving words out entirely. Quotes can serve as both an embellishment and a form of journaling. They an convey the essence of a memory, allowing you to provide the substance through more detailed journaling.

By implementing scrapbooking quotes, you can convey universal emotion to accompany your very personal memories. When taken together with your photos, memorabilia and other embellishments, scrapbooking quotes can help you create a complete layout that will inspire reminiscing, even years after the event has taken place.

But what makes a good scrapbooking quote? A good scrapbooking quote will be:

Catchy - An effective scrapbook quote should be easily remembered. It should stick in your head and make an impact. Think of your favourite song or artist. The best ones get to be that way because they have staying power.

Relevant - The scrapbooking quote may come off as trivial to the reader. However, the meaning of the scrapbooking quote should not be so vague that the reader has to use all of his or her brainpower to understand it. That is, unless you intend for the scrapbook to take on an air of mystery and clue-finding.

Short - A good scrapbooking quote should be able to grab the reader's attention quickly, in just a few words. Unless it is the goal of your layout to have the quote be the center of attention, it should not overpower the photos or memorabilia on your page. The goal of the quote is to bridge the gap between your own words and the images on the page.

Emotional - This does not mean that every quote has to incite tears! A quote should evoke some kind of emotion, sadness, nostalgia, happiness, excitement, etc. - whatever the intended emotion of the layout is.

These are just a few ideas for how scrapbooking quotes can enhance your layouts and your memories. But scrapbooks are personal, and the choice of what makes a good quote is ultimately up to you. If it complements your memories in a way that is meaningful to you, it's the right choice.

Search the Internet for a wealth of ideas for scrapbook quotes. There's a treasure trove of choices out there!

Mixbook 2010 REVIEWS

Mixbook had its beginnings in 2006 as a website to bring friends together through photo books. They have now become a successful online photo book service with an impressive website, full of customization options and special features. Mixbookboasts one of the most freely customizable online photo book services that we reviewed, offering many options for custom layouts and book sizes.

As the creator of a Mixbook photo book, you control all aspects of its customization. You can invite friends to contribute to your photo book, gathering photos from all views of an event. Even though you can have others customize their own pages in your photo book, you have the final say on what gets put through. This feature makes it very easy to create a full-featured, interesting photo book with input from all of your friends.

AutoMix is one of Mixbook’s more impressive and powerful features. You can create a photo book in seconds with this feature; all you need to do is choose a theme and some photos and your photo book is done! If you desire, after AutoMix has created your photo book, you can go back through it and make specific changes, giving you a quick and completely customizable experience.

Mixbook can use photos from many popular web image hosting services like Flickr, SmugMug, Photobucket and Facebook. Other options are available and even if there is another service that you’d like to use that Mixbook doesn’t offer, you can email Mixbook directly and have them add the service.

Features and Options:

Mixbook has created a full-featured website, complete with many photo book sizes and customization options. An uncommon feature in online photo book services, Mixbook allows you to insert your own text boxes, change the size of the photos and even modify their page layouts. This creative freedom in creating your photo book is very refreshing, opening new ideas and possibilities to users of any level of experience.

Mixbook offers a selection of six photo book sizes, allowing you to create the photo book that is right for your needs. Books are available in landscape, portrait and square formats with hardbound and softbound cover options.

All Mixbooks are printed on 100 lb semi-gloss paper that is both acid-free and lignin-free, giving your photos a professional, glossy sheen. Their softcover photo books are bound with glue and hardcover books are saddle-stitched.

Ease of Use:

Mixbook is very easy to use, even with its large array of customizable options and unique features. Options to modify their layouts or create your own give an added level of intuitiveness to this service, leading you through the process easily.

The AutoMix feature makes Mixbook one of the easiest services to use. With AutoMix, you can create a photo book in minutes; all you need to do is choose a theme and select the photos you wish to display. This feature will then take all of the supplied information and randomize it into a completed photo book! If you wish to customize your book further, you can go back through afterwards and edit select portions of the photo book, allowing you to both quickly create a photo book and customize it to your heart’s content without getting bogged down between the two.

Quality:

We were a little disappointed with the quality of Mixbook’s photo books when compared to the others that we received. The customization options are fantastic, but what you gain in personalization, you lose in quality. The photos we submitted to Mixbook came back rather grainy and flat. The colors were muted and not as polished looking as the ones we received from some of our higher ranked online photo book services.

Help/Support:

Mixbook provides most of the standard support features, offering email support and a large FAQ section. A telephone support line is missing from their service, making it a bit less convenient to receive help with your photo book. The support we did receive through email was prompt and helpful, making it a welcome alternative to hold music on a busy phone line.

Summary:

Mixbookis a very personal and customizable service with outstanding features like their automatic book maker, AutoMix. The social aspect of Mixbook is readily apparent from their group photo book option as well as the active community on the Mixbook site. If you’re looking for a great experience creating a photo book, Mixbook is the place for you.
